Joel Scott Osteen (built-in March 5, 1963)[two] is an American pastor, televangelist, and author, based in Houston, Texas. As of 2018, Osteen'south televised sermons were seen by approximately ten million viewers in the U.s.a. and several million more than in over 100 countries weekly.[3] Osteen has also written several all-time-selling books.[4]

Early life and family unit [edit]

Osteen was built-in in Houston, Texas, and is i of six children of John Osteen and Dolores ("Dodie") Pilgrim. His male parent, a former Southern Baptist pastor, founded Lakewood Church building (of which Osteen is the current senior pastor) in the back of an quondam feed store.[v] He graduated from Humble High School, a public high school in the city of Apprehensive, Texas, in 1981,[6] and attended Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he studied radio and telly communications, merely did not graduate; he did not receive a degree from a divinity school.[7] [8] In 1982, he returned to Houston, founded Lakewood's tv set programme, and produced his father'due south televised sermons for 17 years until January 1999, when his father died unexpectedly from a heart set on.[7] [9]

Career [edit]

On January 17, 1999, Osteen preached his outset sermon. On October iii, 1999, he was installed as the new senior pastor of Lakewood Church building.[ten] In 2003, Lakewood Church caused the Compaq Eye, former home of the NBA Houston Rockets and the AHL Houston Aeros and renovated it.[11] [12] According to Osteen in 2008, Lakewood Church building's weekly service TV plan was viewed in more than 100 countries.[13] Lakewood Church estimates that 7 million viewers per week watch the services.[14] [ circular reference ]

Osteen was included on Barbara Walters's listing of the x Nearly Fascinating People of 2006.[15] [16] Former presidential candidate John McCain described Osteen equally his favorite inspirational author.[17] The Osteen family attended Easter breakfast hosted by President Barack Obama at the White House in 2010.[eighteen]

As of 2014, Lakewood'southward attendance had grown from 5,000 to 43,000 people.[19]

Preaching style [edit]

Osteen'due south sermon preparation involves memorizing his remarks and listening to himself on tape.[xx] Osteen says he chooses to focus more on the goodness of God and on living an obedient life rather than on sin.[21] He says that he tries to teach Biblical principles in a simple way, emphasizing the power of love and a positive attitude.[22] When asked why he does not focus more than on sin, the devil and hell in particular, Osteen stated in an interview with CBN News:

When I grew up, the devil was a reason why I had a headache or the devil was the reason I got mad today. We always blamed the devil. I recollect today when I say the enemy, I like to arrive broader. Sometimes the enemy can be our own thoughts. Nosotros've trained ourselves the wrong way. Or the enemy can be our own lack of discipline. Some people preach nigh hell like you're already going there, and to me the Gospel means "Adept News." I'd rather say God is a God of mercy. And so I think the people already know what they're doing incorrect, and I certainly believe in hell. Simply to me, when I see thousands of people before me, information technology just doesn't come up out of me to say, "You guys are terrible, and y'all're going to hell." I'd rather say that God is a God of mercy. You've got to live an obedient life, just for every mistake yous've made, at that place'south mercy in that location, and I believe we can practise better.[9]

Events [edit]

Since 2004, Osteen, along with his married woman, accept hosted Night of Promise events, every bit well equally their annual stadium event called "America's Night of Hope", in the U.S. and around the world.[23] [24] [25] The event incorporates gimmicky Christian music and inspirational messages to reach the masses at the venue and others watching online.[26] Osteen also hosted an event at his Lakewood Church in 2018, in collaboration with rapper Kanye W, called Kanye's Sunday Service. As per media reports, the event was attended by 17,000 also every bit joined by many people streaming online.[27] He also held his Easter service during COVID-19 with Mariah Carey and Tyler Perry.[28]

Books [edit]

Osteen'due south first book, Your Best Life At present: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential, was released in October 2004, and reached the number i position on The New York Times All-time Seller list.[29]

He released his second book, titled Go a Better Yous: 7 Keys to Improving Your Life Every Day, in Oct 2007. It also topped The New York Times Best Seller listing[xxx] and had a first printing of three million copies.[31] Osteen has said that the book focuses more on relationships and not getting stuck where nosotros are in life.[32]

Also those ii books, Osteen has written more than 18 others. See, Book list.

Personal life [edit]

On Apr 4, 1987, Osteen married Victoria Osteen (née Iloff), who later on would get co-pastor of Lakewood Church building.[2] They have a son and daughter.[33] In 2002, his older siblings, Paul, Lisa, and Tamara, and his younger sister, April, were also involved in full-time ministry, and his half-blood brother Justin was doing missionary piece of work.[ten]

Osteen lives with his family in a 17,000 square-foot mansion in River Oaks, with an estimated value of $ten.5 1000000.[34] Osteen says that equally senior pastor, he draws no salary from the church, which has an almanac upkeep of $70 million,[35] and that he instead relies on income from volume sales.[36]

Political and social views [edit]

Osteen has generally avoided discussing or preaching almost controversial issues such as gay marriage, abortion, and politics.[fifteen] [37] Having gone on record saying homosexuality is "not God's best",[38] he has stated he believes the church has a tendency to become overly focused on single issues (such as homosexuality) to the point of neglecting others.[15] [39] When asked if he idea God approves of homosexuality, Osteen said homosexuality is a sin according to his interpretation of Scripture, only said gay people are welcome in his church building without judgment.[twoscore] [41] [39] [42]

In an interview on Play tricks News in 2008 during the Republican Party presidential primary race, when discussing whether he thought that Mormons were Christians, Osteen indicated that he believed that they were. He further revealed that he had not studied the religion.[43] In an interview in 2011, Osteen stated his support for Israel.[44]

Controversies [edit]

Prosperity gospel criticism [edit]

Osteen's sermons and writings are sometimes criticized for promoting prosperity theology, or the prosperity gospel, a belief that the reward of material gain is the will of God for all pious Christians.[37] [43] [45] [46] [47] [48] [49]

On October fourteen, 2007, 60 minutes ran a 12-minute segment on Osteen, titled "Joel Osteen Answers His Critics", during which Reformed theologian Michael Horton told CBS News contributor Byron Pitts that Osteen'due south bulletin is heresy. Horton stated that the trouble with Osteen's message is that it makes faith about united states of america instead of about God.[50]

Osteen is estimated to have a net worth of over $50 million, with his church building taking in $43 million a twelvemonth in collections.[4]

Hurricane Harvey response [edit]

During the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in Baronial 2017, Osteen received significant criticism for not making Lakewood Church, a 606,000-foursquare-foot, xvi,000-seat former sports arena, available as an emergency shelter for those displaced past the storm.[51] [52] [53] [54] [55] On Baronial 27, posts from the church and a Lakewood Church associate pastor's social media accounts stated that the church was "inaccessible due to astringent flooding," and acquaintance pastor John Grey posting further, "If WE could get there WE WOULD Open THE DOORS."[56] [57] Lakewood spokesperson Don Iloff subsequently described floodwaters as one human foot from spilling over the facility's floodgate and surging into the edifice.[58] He likewise stated that pictures showing Lakewood gratuitous of flooding were taken on Monday, after the alluvion waters had lowered.[59] [60]

Osteen disputed the merits that flood waters closed the church, maxim "the church has been open from the commencement," and, "[w]e've always been open ... How this notion got started, that we're not a shelter and we're not taking people in is a simulated narrative."[55] [61] This contradicted his earlier statement that the church would open when other refugee centers were full.[55] [62] On the evening of August 28, it was announced by Lakewood that information technology would open at noon the side by side mean solar day as an available shelter to storm victims and emergency personnel, which it did.[55]

On August xv, 2018, less than a year after Harvey struck, the City of Houston and Mayor Sylvester Turner proclaimed a day in honor of the assistance of Lakewood and Osteen in rebuilding efforts across the Houston area.[63] [64] It stated that Lakewood and its pastors had provided "assist to more than 1,150 Houston-expanse families whose homes were damaged or destroyed by floodwaters" and bought "i.1 million dollars in building materials, furniture, appliances, and paid labor, equally well equally through the contribution of more than two,500 volunteers".[65]

Other [edit]

In 2011, Osteen and Lakewood Church were sued by the band The American Dollar for copyright infringement.[66] A gauge in 2012 ruled in favor of Osteen, simply gave The American Dollar go out to amend the case.[67]

In 2020, Osteen's Lakewood Church accepted $iv.4 meg in federal PPP loans for COVID relief.[68] The church began repayment in Oct 2021.[69]
